What really excites me about sensory science is its wide and practical application in making life easier, more enjoyable, and much more successful – almost instantaneously!
I take my clients, by virtue of their unique sensory threshold scores (i.e. how intensely they register stimulation through each of their sensory systems), through the following five key areas of awareness they will benefit from most:
1) EMOTIONS – How aware are they of their emotions? How stressed or frustrated are they? How stressful do they experience their work environment, their colleagues, their designated tasks? Are they equipped to regulate their emotions?
2) BEHAVIOUR – how healthy or how unhelpful are their behavioural patterns? Do they understand where their behaviour unconsciously originates from? Are they equipped to change and adapt their behaviour by making use of sensory science?
3) PERFORMANCE – do they know that their brain’s focus, attention, and registration can be enhanced through simple sensory strategies and environmental adapations? Did they know that optimal performance is something they can achieve? Do they know what triggers them and what distracts them at work? How can they stay motivated and energized throughout a workday?
4) RELATIONSHIPS – do they know that sensory wiring directly determines social behaviour and preferences? Are they aware that different sensory styles, are potential pitfalls to conflict and misunderstandings? Do they have empathy and understanding firstly of themself, but also for their sensory neurodiverse team of colleagues?
5) ENVIRONMENT – do they understand why they feel stressed / overwhelmed in certain environments, and bored / unproductive in others? Do they know how to adjust their environment so as to improve wellbeing and productivity? Do they know how to choose and design optimal environments according to their sensory needs?
When empowering clients around these crucial areas to optimal functionality – in reality TO LIFE! – I am always acutely aware of how gracious, effective, and liberating the sensory approach is.
