As we head into the festive season, let’s commit to only ONE simple sensory practice which will allow us to process, enjoy, and optimally benefit from our down time.

I often returned from holidays in the past not knowing where the time had gone, unable to clearly remember the places I visited, and not able to reap the benefits of good quality rest, regulation, and restoration.

Nowadays, when my husband and I arrive at a holiday destination (or any new place) we have the simple practice of going outside (no phones!) placing both our hands firmly on the grass/sand/a tree/a rock etc, look each other in the eye and say out loud:
We. Are. Here. Now.

This simple sensory practice drops us in the present, engages the sensory systems of visual, auditory, touch, smell, and movement, and allows for a moment of affirmation and shared commitment to being present, available, and fully ‘here now’ for ouselves, each other, and our family.

Give it a try – it is rather addictive – and it represents the simplest of human neuroscientific practices in our ‘forever elsewhere’ realities and lifestyles. Your next break does not need to go unnoticed.
