The topical subject of suffering from ‘Future Shock’ is a critical theme to explore, sooner rather than later.
Future Shock refers to our realities changing faster than what we can process. This results in fatigue, stress, burn-out, and ill-health, all of which I believe speaks to Sensory Overload.
The fast-paced, never ending, digital onslaught of visual and auditory stimuli, is not something our multi-sensory brains are wired to deal with effectively. Future Shock will continue to be a part of our realities, much like the devices we faithfully carry around on us. But as Seth Godin mentions in his recent blog on Facing the Future (https://lnkd.in/d795AxYG) we need to respond with resilience, then only can we make this new reality work for us, and not against.
We can equip ourselves for resilience by getting back to basics at a Lifestyle/Behaviour level:
Sleep – sleep well and sleep enough.
Nutrition – eat nourishing, healthy, whole foods.
Fitness – move to feel calm, move to feel alert; daily.
Sunlight – sunny SA provides a brilliant tool for a resilient mind and mood.
Social connections – spend time with ‘safe’ people, for a long and happy life.
Limit Screentime – if you were really smart, you would start with this one.
The only way to be Future proof against Future shock, is to vigilently implement sensory mindfulness and sensory wellness, as we are so much more than simply users of technology and AI. The faster the world moves, the slower our pace should be.
